Found the arrow, no nock, impact was about 5' over his back. Now thinking the nock failed when I released which caused the miss, or at least that's the excuse I'll use. My sight was on him before/after so not sure how I'd miss 7' high otherwise? Disappointed, but better than finding a fatty arrow IMHO. I'm back in the tree, is this spot busted? They never saw me, just reacted to shot noise and my meh
I'd stick it out. Wouldn't be surprised at all if you get another shot at him, he's probably already forgot what happened... Sounds like your in a good spot. Just be mindful of where you left ground scent checking your arrow, and be thinking about trying to shoot the next one before they hit it, especially if one comes by soon while that ground scent is still really fresh. How many arrows do you have left? I would want to take a shot at a leaf on the ground or something (where you don't expect a deer to walk) to verify your bow is still on.

Good call on ground scent and checking the bow thank you, I've got 4 more so no worries on that front, everything looks ok except that missing lumenock so sticking it out for now.

I keep telling myself "that's hunting, you'll get another chance" but man does that stink lol. I'm sure you've all been there before and this is not a unique feeling. Does feel great to find deer like that when walking in to a new area though, I'd just love to bring one out with me too, but wouldn't we all.

Come on back, bucko, I've got a different gift waiting for you.

Well 3 min later a different buck came cruising through but downwind, got about 75 yards away, winded me, and spun around and went back the way he came. I like this spot.

Drop one where she was hit, 25 yards. But it was a bad shot, she crawled for 10 yards. I got her lower spine but she stop moving quick so thank god. Giving her a few more minutes. Shaking so hard. This is my first deer from saddle, public, and bow.

Congratulations man! Awesome!

Big thanks to @Bigterp. This is close to the spot that he showed me. Couldn't of done this without his help. Still shaking. But I'm hook for life. This is so much different than that doe l harvested from a feeder on a lease. I wasnt sure if this was for me since for a while it seem like l was more into gear and this community in general. But l have such a sense of accomplishment. Thank you to all you that answered some of my dumbest questions these past years.

Super happy for you man! And agreed, I haven't met him in person yet but seems like @Bigterp is a pretty good dude.

How long of a drag do you have? I bet it'll be the best workout you ever had!

Also want to give a shout out to @Robert loper I re-watched your map reading/scouting videos last night. Targeting saddles, corners, and points put me in this spot and the deer are here. Thank you!

Congrats man!! Hopefully your packing out that’s a mean drag.

Ok that’s next lesson…… definitely not dragging deer outta there.
Can I get in on the quartering and pack out in the field lessons too if you gents do get together? The hawk crawler is pretty good, but it's heavy and I feel like that's a good skill to have. I already own the dang popup pack, might as well put it to use.

I'd be happy to use one of my spots to not burn another of your, or drive.

Mid day lull, debating getting down to explore a bit but wind is holding really good for this spot as long as they don't sneak behind me like that one did. Wind still browning mostly from the west, blowing down the saddle and out over the lake behind me... I expect evening thermals to follow the same pattern? So much to learn, so much fun doing so.

Sounds like 2+ doe blowing from the other side of the lake. Pretty far but nuts how sound can travel over the water. Guess I have a pretty good idea where the guy who beat me to parking headed in this AM.

Order some reusable game bags & maybe we can all get together for a day during gun season. Between a handful of us someone should score & be a hands on lesson. Once you do gutless breakdown & pack out it’s tough to go back ( unless you can drive to them)

Decided to all day sit rather than scout around since all the deer headed in to the peninsula I wanted to scout anyway.

That and (I may be going nuts) I swear that every once in a while when the wind blows I can smell deer. Not dead deer, tarsal gland? Living deer smell (I think). This leads me to believe that on the other side of the thick stuff I can't see through about 60-80 yards away is bedding and they may be not that far away. The peninsula only goes another few hundred yard further, I'm about a third of the way into it. They can still sneak by me, in either direction but I've got a pretty good chance if they come out of there in this spot so I'm staying instead of blowing them out of there. No idea if it's the wrong decision, part of me wants to go exploring, but I've already found deer and they are cut off by water in most directions unless they swim so here's to hoping. (And hanging).

Edit- just heard something moving that's likely just a squirrel.

Re-edit, confirmed squirrel lol. Still staying

I could smell my buck well before I could see him. And that was in early October. He made two scrapes on the way in, and hit two around my setup.

My dad found a deer for another hunter, because he could smell it, despite no visible trail to follow.

The nose knows.

It helps that it's a unique smell, didn't realize until I was field dressing my first deer that I'd smelled deer in the woods before. Now the nose knows. Thanks for confirming I'm not having a stroke!
