Saddle hunt with your tree stand harness

I'm new to saddle hunting as a lot of people here are. Like you said, its the newest trend in the hunting world and after Christmas everyone is wanting to get into it (guilty myself). The biggest take away I got from this personally is the $0.30 tender. That saves a ton of money in comparison to the rope ascender from REI. It makes the prusik knot way easier to use from what I can see and doesn't play a safety factor whatsoever. Thank you for the video!

This is true but be mindful of that metal tender binding and rolling over too far as it will put more wear on the ropes

I don’t think the metal tender would wear the rope near as much as a rope man. It’s completely smooth and the rope man has sharp teeth

Also, your goal should not to be to find the cheapest way to saddle hunt, it should be to find the safest way to saddle hunt. That doesn't mean you have to spend top dollar, but it should mean that you know which equipment to use and what it is intended to be used for.

If you are looking for a very cost effective and generally safe way to gauge if saddle hunting is right for you a Rock Climbing Harness (RCH) and DIY fleece saddle are hard to beat.

I didn’t watch the video so I can’t comment to how the OP has his rig set up, but I’ll share how I’ve done it once or twice. I’ve used my HSS Fall harness’ lineman loops to climb the tree with my sticks. Once at hunting height I hooked up my tether to the fleece saddle and brought it tight to my butt but the weight still on the lineman’s belt. Then, I connected the Additional tether above the first and connected my HSS fall line to that tether. Once connected to the fall line, I sat down in the fleece and unhooked the lineman’s belt. The fall line crosses your shoulder, but I found that it did not hinder my movement or shots. Thoughts on this set up? I’m no longer using it but I would think if you’re not using a RCH this would work too.

Gotcha, yea if I was using a harness I would
1. keep leaning weight on lineman’s belt/loops as intended
2. Then connect fall line
3. Then connect fleece saddle
4. Then remove lineman’s belt.

I agree with others who’ve said I would not count on lineman’s loops to save you from a fall. At least the fall line is intended for that.

I will also add that once I removed the LB in step 4 I also run it through the tether, but that’s only after I’m connected by the fall line.

Order or failures would be
Fleece saddle
LB ran to tether
Then hopefully by that point the fall line catches you. At least was my thoughts for redundancy.

Aw, theres no need for that passive aggressive talk. I practice what I preach. I don't use a ropeman on my tether, and I wouldn't suggest anyone use anything outside of it intended purpose without knowing the risks. I think most folks aren't riding high horses, but would rather not see others getting hurt.

Yep I got a tall horse. I have never and will never tell someone that the way I hunt is safest way! Do what I do! Not once never.

I use a ropeman on my linesman that’s not fall arrest rated either so ya there’s that.
So you are completely ok not calling out a few things to make a man think about things and make his system better? I didn’t know looking out for a guy was wrong?
