Saddle hunt with your tree stand harness

I'm new to saddle hunting as a lot of people here are. Like you said, its the newest trend in the hunting world and after Christmas everyone is wanting to get into it (guilty myself). The biggest take away I got from this personally is the $0.30 tender. That saves a ton of money in comparison to the rope ascender from REI. It makes the prusik knot way easier to use from what I can see and doesn't play a safety factor whatsoever. Thank you for the video!

This is true but be mindful of that metal tender binding and rolling over too far as it will put more wear on the ropes

I don’t think the metal tender would wear the rope near as much as a rope man. It’s completely smooth and the rope man has sharp teeth

Treestand harnesses are fall arrest devices, not fall prevention or even comfort rated. Please use caution and safety when using these devices in ways not intended.

Also, your goal should not to be to find the cheapest way to saddle hunt, it should be to find the safest way to saddle hunt. That doesn't mean you have to spend top dollar, but it should mean that you know which equipment to use and what it is intended to be used for.

If you are looking for a very cost effective and generally safe way to gauge if saddle hunting is right for you a Rock Climbing Harness (RCH) and DIY fleece saddle are hard to beat.

I agree, there is nothing you do that is more important than your safety
used properly hooked to the lanyard in the back, a tree stand harness is a fall arrest but is a linesman loops fall arrest rated?

good discussion, gives one something to think about, and no one has yelled at me yet,

Bub buy a rope man 1 and feel it in real life. The teeth are not sharp

More friction on the rope with ur prussik and .30 cent piece of metal

I’ve run one all season on my predator lines and have no wear

If it’s a money issue I’ll buy u one and send it to u

Run one for awhile

Haha yeah not yet!
It’s good for the younger generation to be forced to think sometimes especially when everything is so damn automatic for them anymore

3494B48E-9BDA-478B-BB3C-15C91C53996B.jpegI didn’t watch the video so I can’t comment to how the OP has his rig set up, but I’ll share how I’ve done it once or twice. I’ve used my HSS Fall harness’ lineman loops to climb the tree with my sticks. Once at hunting height I hooked up my tether to the fleece saddle and brought it tight to my butt but the weight still on the lineman’s belt. Then, I connected the Additional tether above the first and connected my HSS fall line to that tether. Once connected to the fall line, I sat down in the fleece and unhooked the lineman’s belt. The fall line crosses your shoulder, but I found that it did not hinder my movement or shots. Thoughts on this set up? I’m no longer using it but I would think if you’re not using a RCH this would work too.

he was sitting down in the saddle unhooking the linesman with all his weight only in the fleece saddle then putting his lineman in the caribiner with the bridge, using the lineman loops to catch him in a fall and not being hooked to anything but the fleece for the min it takes to move the lineman, which may never be a problem until its is and gravity comes a calling
be safe my friends

Gotcha, yea if I was using a harness I would
1. keep leaning weight on lineman’s belt/loops as intended
2. Then connect fall line
3. Then connect fleece saddle
4. Then remove lineman’s belt.

I agree with others who’ve said I would not count on lineman’s loops to save you from a fall. At least the fall line is intended for that.

I will also add that once I removed the LB in step 4 I also run it through the tether, but that’s only after I’m connected by the fall line.

Order or failures would be
Fleece saddle
LB ran to tether
Then hopefully by that point the fall line catches you. At least was my thoughts for redundancy.

Lotta people riding their high horses talking about using things correctly and what they are designed and rated for huh? I must of missed the memo on the Ropemans saying that they're fall rated and designed for saddlehunting. Learn something new everyday.

Aw, theres no need for that passive aggressive talk. I practice what I preach. I don't use a ropeman on my tether, and I wouldn't suggest anyone use anything outside of it intended purpose without knowing the risks. I think most folks aren't riding high horses, but would rather not see others getting hurt.

Well Tethrd said it was okay so it’s gospel here.

Yep I got a tall horse. I have never and will never tell someone that the way I hunt is safest way! Do what I do! Not once never.

I use a ropeman on my linesman that’s not fall arrest rated either so ya there’s that.
So you are completely ok not calling out a few things to make a man think about things and make his system better? I didn’t know looking out for a guy was wrong?

See you in a tree, Ricky

Your whole issue with Tethrd is getting old quick like soggy bread. You need to think for your self. I have been trying to be nice and make you think about YOUR set up what YOU said was SAFE and pushed it on some one who knew better. Maybe some young inexperienced saddler sees that crap and dies. With those worn out ropes, unrated lineman loops sitting in a fleece saddle without a back up. You sir are making “saddles” dangerous and your argument so far has been “I Think” and “Summit has been around longer than Tethrd”

I have no affiliation with Tethrd and don’t own any of there products.

I agree with this whole heartedly

Kid gets in the game late 2019

Won’t buy from anyone reputable
Won’t make something substantial

And then wants to say how he’s noticed a bunch of people getting on since Christmas like he’s been around forever and knows the “flow”

As u said he says it’s safe with no real background or experience to lead others into the dark

Anyone reading this thread should disregard the YouTube video and look elsewhere for DIY advice
This will get u hurt

I was trying to be polite as well but here we are

Just because you’re old doesn’t make you smart. If you can honestly believe that leaning back on linesmans loops with rated tethers is any more unsafe than anything else on this forum maybe you’re the idiot here.
