Night 2/21

Got home from cross country later than planned… son ran his pr for the year 18:28 and got 33 in our district as a freshman.

Ran to the farm and followed the combine into the field attached to the woods I planned on hunting. Saw some fresh scrapes walking in and a few rubs close to the edge of the woods… I should have sat close to or on edge of field but I wanted to push deeper into the woods in case they moved late…

I spooked off 3 does and a shooter buck… i went another 100 yards in on their exit trail and set up. I had the wind and cover sound from combine so hoping they come back through tonight… around 515 I had a button buck come by on his way to the field… I brought the compound so first doe that walks by in range is getting an arrow.

Finally! My first deer seen in October. Had a little buck cruise through. Drew on him and swung with him from my 2 o’clock all the way to 10 o’clock. He never slowed down or cleared brush for a good shot opportunity.

Night 3/21

Was a pretty awful night full of rain… I thought it would stop so I sat on that scrape I’ve gotten those buck pictures on… saw three does, at last light a couple big body deer hit the bean field…

Calling for more rain today.. currently the radar looks like it will pass by early afternoon same wind for the scrape set up so I may head there..

My other farm that was getting good pictures on a scrape has went cold since they combined. I saw a super fresh new scrape and a bunch of new rubs on my way in yesterday so I may go grab that camera and move it…

Anyone using a cheap set of rain gear to keep in there pack? I got absolutely soaked last night… I was looking at frog Toggs on Amazon might run into tsc today and see what they have… gotta do something out forecast is causing for a wet next ten days

If you’re looking for cheap gear, you can get a set of frogg toggs from walmart for about $30. They work well enough to get the job done.

I have a set of frogg toggs, not their cheapest ones, pilot series I think, they worked great during a week long fishing trip in Alaska this July. We didn't get dumped on, but drizzle off and on and lots of spray/flying fish etc in the boats, they worked well.

My last few days in the park absolutely sucked. I did have one buck, a spike, come through on Saturday evening. I drew on him and held for as long as I could. Probably 45 seconds or so, and he never gave me a clear shot. I let down as he walked off.

Looked at tsc they had a set that weighed 20 pounds and cheap ponchos there was a nice bibs and jacket set of carharts but if you m going to spend that kind of money I’ll get something made specifically for hunting… just climbed back in same tree I was in yesterday nice night but calling for rain shortly after closing time… hope they get in their feet early…

I busted a small 8 point out of the corn on my way in..

Well, I'm on quarantine for the next 2 weeks, work-related close contact. Naturally, that should be an easy excuse to go hunting but I burned my 1st deer tag on a doe and have to wait until gun season for my next chance at a buck which oddly enough is in 2 weeks. I may do some local area scouting for post gun season archery.

Nothing saying you can’t take another doe then upgrade later! Good luck with scouting, and hope you don’t end up coming down with anything. Good time to be on a 2 week sabbatical though.

Night 4/21

Saw 9 bucks 6 does tonight

One borderline shooter at last light grunted at him trying to get him close he came to 30 and raked a tree…then went back to cover. All the other bucks were small. They were harassing does sparring, 4 of them hit the same scrape down in the woods… getting close

Night 5/21

High winds and chance for rain today… I decided to go out and prep a tree where I saw that buck bed and all those rubs.. Then I was going to speed scout two other patches of woods..

Got out at 1 snuck my way in.. bumped two does but I saw them long before they noticed me at 20 yards that’s a win

Got to the tree I wanted and started drilling got 15 feet or so and decided it wasn’t the right tree lol… move over to a cherry a few yards over.. start climbing see 120 ish buck stand up where bed was at.. I keep watching him as I am taking my time climbing.. He was 90 yards away, milling around rubbing trees.. I got to hunting height and decided I should hunt this spot even with the high winds and rain..

He ended up working away from me into the wind. I could see him rubbing a tree and then he was gone.. thought he might have bedded down so I decided to stick it out.

I saw 11 does and one other small buck. He was to my right working up the creek into the wind… not a single deer I saw was in shooting range but I got some good Intel where they are crossing the crp field and the hay field that was behind me..

In other disturbing news one the bucks I’m after was out tonight in front of the camera where I hunted last night.

Day 6/21

Got my outdoor wood pellet/corn boiler going today so that took up most of the morning.. got out to the property around 1 with a game plan to scout my way in on a piece I haven’t set foot on yet… ended up messing up my entry and bumped a lot of deer two were decent looking bucks… decided to put some miles on and figure it out… ended up following a scrape rub line and came across an awesome spot… was a small opening next to a creek prolly 50yards by 50 yards… at least 6 different trails converging, I counted 5 scrapes and there was 4-5 apple trees that were dropping… I picked a tree out and set it up for tomorrow with our forecasted east wind…

By this time it was 4 o’clock so I ran up the road to the small freshly picked corn field and set up over a few scrapes in the back… saw 2 bucks and 5 does.. The bigger buck had me excited at first but once he tuned his dead I realized he was a half rack… had him at 23 yards…

Feeling pretty optimist about Tomorrow!

Day 7/21

My morning spot I felt so optimistic about was a bust… wind swirling has deer blow at me from two different directions…

Scouted a spot mid day in a little overlooked patch of woods found some good buck sign have a good forecasted wind for it Halloween night.

Went to one of the normal farms for the night hunt… Two of the other fellows that hunt there were putting up elevated blinds… I hunted my furthest stand location from where they were messing around… Figured their pressure might push something to come out further down..
only saw a half rack and 4 does… Almost shot a doe but it was getting late and she was at 42 yards…

Start of day 8 is rainy didn’t go out… have a sick kid to take to the Dr. Forecast has rain stopping around 4 might try and pop out for an evening hunt.

Raining here today as well. I was hoping to sneak out after work, since the heaviest rain is supposed to be around 3-4 and then it tails off to a drizzle... Which I hear can get the deer moving after they hinker down for the heavy stuff. If I do it'll be my first time trying to hunt in my rain gear so that will be interesting (my frog toggs aren't the most form fitting garment so I may bust out the old arm protector). Even if I don't go, I'll be out tomorrow afternoon/evening for a half day, there's a managed gun hunt in the (usually archery only) place I've been hunting in the AM.
